Pink Slime of the Sea

Tuna Scrape really? At least 141 peaple sick from a salmonella outbreak thatwas linked to sushi. The suspect is something called Nakaochi Scrape. Nakaochi Scrape is described by the Food and Drug Administration as backmeat from a tuna fish, this meat is specifically scraped off the bones and looks like a ground product. Sounds so yummy! Now this meat is being compared to the the lean textured beef called pink slime. Indeed it does seem to be the fish version of pink slime. Just what we need, another disgusting and harmful product to put into our systems. Tuna Scrape is the part of the fish that still remains after the filets have been removed. This meat is scraped off the bone with a spoon like device. It is sometimes chopped into smaller piece but no further processing is done after that. So I guess it isn’t as bad as the meat pink slime but it is just so gross to think about.

End of semester extra flex… killer on the body

This week has probably been the most unhealthy week for me. I had 145$ of flex left for this week and next. That is a lot of flex for one person. So my room mate and myself decided we were going to order pizzas for the majority of the week. Everytime we went to pick up the pizza we got drinks and snacks. When I say snacks I mean bags of chips, candy, and more candy. I had so much sugar this week that I shouldnt have any teeth left. With these amount of flex I also decided that everytime i go to the science building for food I am going to get a desert to go along with my lunch. I think I have gotten one of everything. Including oreo cheesecake, cupcakes, muffins, cookies, and molten lava cake. These all sound so delisious until you step on the scale. Now i feel like i need to starve myself until I go to Australia. Needless to say I will be hitting the gym super hard the week after finals/the week before I leave.

Bittman

In Bittman’s Good Friday Food Links blog http://bittman.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/04/06/good-friday-food-links/#more-4049  he talks about many different things that have been going on. The first thing he talks about is the F.D.A. and how the declined the chemical BPA from food and drink packaging. Other F.D.A news is who’s side are they on when it comes to the Just Label It campaign. According to the campaign they turned in one million signatures but the agency says they only received a little under 400 signatures. So who is lying? Monsanto representative threatened a public official in Vermont that they would sue if they state passed GMO labeling. Wow! they want to sue because people want to know if they are getting genetically modified food. Hmmmm that seems pretty harsh. People have the right to know what they are eating.A house bill was introduced on the requiring of the labeling on pink slime. But apparently pink slime isn’t our only problem there were 26 hard to pronounce ingredients in a burger. That is very disturbing and wrong.

oops! two week catch up

So I have been extremely good about staying away from red meat, until last week. I was at my friends house and they made burgers on the grill and I didn’t want to be rude and not eat, so I took one. It tasted so good until the burger was about half gone. Then with each bite after I started to feel bad about what I was eating and I had to stop. Not only did it make me emotionally sick that I ate meat but it made me physically sick to. Worst stomach ache I have had in a long time. I guess once you stop eating it starting again doesn’t work to well. Needless to say I won’t make that mistake again. This week I haven’t eaten any meat, not even chicken and that is an accomplishment for me. Granted I had to go off campus to eat to find decent food. Talking in class today gave me some hope for the food here on campus next year and the years to come.

Pink Slime

Pink Slime! I am not buying that this “stuff” is safe. Tons of people are supported BPI and saying that the pink slime though gross to think about is “safe, nutritious, and icky”  the only thing I agree with in that statement is ICKY! In this blog http://www.foodpolitics.com/2012/03/ive-been-lobbied-intense-efforts-to-save-pink-slime-aimed-at-governors-usda-officials-and-me/ it says pink slime though icky, has some definite advantages and that we should hear about them. I would like to know what these advantages are, I seriously doubt that anyone could get me to eat that crap! A mother is the founder and president of STOP forborne illness, she is a mother who died from eating a contaminated hamburger back in 1993. She says BPI supports this foundation which in my view must mean that there pink slime is in fact safe, though I am still skeptical.

boring old food…..

This week has been just like the rest. I am getting really tired of the food here on campus. I never eat in the cafe cause the food is disgusting, I always eat at clydes, bennys, or the periodic table…. and there aren’t many healthy options or anything that I will eat. I have become extremely picky when it comes to food. I drive my family nuts on the weekends. Instead of my mom making food for her and my step brother and sister, she makes a different meal for my step dad, and then she makes another dinner for me. We drive her nuts. But I think it is my right as a daughter. She doesn’t feel the same way. Regardless I am really happy to go home this weekend I am ready for some yummy and different food. Since I am catholic and it is lent I can’t eat meat on Fridays(not that I would anyway) but this means the rest of my family can’t either and now they will eat what I eat everyday. So maybe I will make dinner tonight. Maybe some sautéed veggies and some pasta sounds yummy to me. I am in the mood to experiment. Who knows maybe I will come up with something delicious!

I still dont understand it.

Bittman’s article More Good News about Bad Gestation Crates http://bittman.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/03/09/more-good-news-about-bad-gestation-crates/ talks about pork supply chains talk about being rid of gestation grates by the year 2017. I do not understand why it will take years to fix. Why can’t you just take the grates out and put up some new fences for the sows? It can’t be that hard can it? I mean I know there is thousands of these crates but come on, it should take years to get rid of them. They just don’t want to get rid of the crates. They like there systems and they don’t want to change it so they will continue to push it off as long as they can, its pathetic. It needs to change ASAP not 5 years from now.
